China's packaging industry is steadily increasing its technological content and has gradually emerged as a vital sector within the nation's national economy. By 2020, it is projected that China's packaging industry will have transformed into a new type of industry characterized by high technology, strong economic returns, minimal resource consumption, reduced environmental pollution, and the full utilization of its human capital advantages. With enormous growth potential, the packaging industry has truly become a thriving "sunrise industry."
Although the domestic packaging industry boasts a promising outlook for future growth, it currently faces three major inefficiencies: First, the product structure is dominated by simple, rudimentary items with slow innovation cycles, resulting in an imbalanced plastic packaging portfolio that struggles to keep pace with evolving market demands. Second, most packaging companies remain relatively small in scale, leading to low industry concentration. Finally, regional development remains uneven—while the packaging industry in eastern regions is well-developed, western areas lag significantly behind.
Packaging materials are constantly evolving, with innovations emerging beyond traditional options like paper-plastic, glass, and metal. In addition to these conventional choices, manufacturers are now exploring the use of entirely new raw materials for packaging—particularly plant-based materials, which are beginning to make their way into the market. As more and more novel packaging materials are discovered and put to practical use, the variety of domestic packaging options is set to grow even richer in the future.
Thanks to the rapid advancement of the materials industry, cutting-edge packaging solutions are continually being introduced, such as microwave-safe packaging that boasts exceptional resistance to pressure, superior barrier properties, excellent heat-sealing capabilities, and outstanding gas-tightness. However, it’s important to note that the future of the packaging industry won’t just hinge on the development and application of innovative materials—it will also require deeper processing and refinement. To ensure sustained growth, the packaging industry must fundamentally rethink and restructure its industrial landscape.
Currently, China's packaging industry is still in a phase of rapid development. During the 12th Five-Year Plan period, the domestic packaging industry is expected to maintain a healthy and stable growth trajectory, with continuously strengthening independent innovation capabilities. Meanwhile, the industrial structure will undergo further optimization, significantly boosting the sector's capacity for sustainable development.
Forecasts indicate that from 2011 to 2015, the total output value of the packaging industry will likely grow at an average annual rate of 6%, driven by robust demand. By 2015, production is projected to reach approximately 36 million tons of paper-based packaging products, 9.46 million tons of plastic packaging, 4.91 million tons of metal packaging, 15.5 million tons of glass packaging, and 1.2 million sets of packaging machinery.
By 2015, the overall level of information technology integration in the packaging industry is expected to equal or surpass that of moderately developed countries.
